This beautiful view over the roofs of Linz can be found at the top of the Schlossmuseum. Go west, straight up an alley, through the „Rudolfstor“ into the inner courtyard of the Schlossmuseum. Keep to the left and you will reach the next puzzle:
How many spires were there in Linz around 1800?
The castle was built on the site of the former Roman fort of Lentia. The first known mention dates from 20 June 799. Under Emperor Frederick III, the castle was converted into a palace in 1477, and it served as his residence from 1489 to 1493. The Friedrichstor gate, which is still preserved today, dates from this time. His son Maximilian I often stayed in Linz and in the castle. His grandson, the later Emperor Ferdinand I, had the palace extended and sumptuously furnished for his wife Anna of Bohemia and Hungary after the wedding celebrated in Linz. Their children Elisabeth (1526) and Ferdinand II (1529) were born in Linz Castle. Their daughter Catherine, after separating from her husband, the Polish King Sigismund II. August, lived in Linz Castle with her servants from October 1567 until her death in 1572. You can still visit parts of the old city wall around the castle today.
